24 DE DICIEMBRE

September 12, 2010, more than a report of a sterilization campaign, this is a personal essay of my experience at this blitz.  You see, I am a person that aims towards perfection even though we live in an imperfect world.  Every time we do a blitz, I plan and prepare to the last detail, weeks in advance.

For this blitz, I took the attitude of 'que sera, sera'.  Swear that I didn't smoke anything.  We only had four volunteers, including me and three vets.  We became more efficient with less, thank God the assembly line concept is embedded in our minds.

World Animal Day, 406 animals sterilized

The event kicked off on September 30, 2010, with the sterilization of 62 animals in Las Tablas.  In the 8 years that we have been working for the less fortunate animals, we have realized that we also improve the welfare of the guardians and rescuers and  of many people that come in contact with the cause.  The surprise in Las Tablas was the enthusiastic support of the young men from Teen Challenge; this is a Christian faith-based organization to help people overcome life-controlling drug and alcohol problems in order to become productive members of society.

9 de Enero, Regional de San Miguelito

How do we really make a difference to improve the welfare of the animals? ---- BY ADDRESSING THE ROOT OF THE PROBLEM:  controlling the overpopulation of dogs and cats by offering low-cost and in many cases at no cost the services of quality spay/neuter services.  Spay/Panama has been acknowledged by renowned international organizations has a group doing things the right way to help the animals.  On Sunday, November 14, 2010, 134 animals were sterilized at the community of 9 de Enero.  This was done in conjunction with the Health Ministry.

EL VALLE DE ANTON, DECEMBER 5, 2010

Having done 18 blitzes in 2010, the team had decided to take a rest in December -- not because we were tired but because we did not have funds to buy the required surgical supplies to do more.  At most of the blitzes we collect less than 15% of our costs, not including the cost of transporting the staff and the equipment and the food and all the miscellaneous expenses.
EMBERA-PURU EDUCATIONAL PROJECT

Education plays an important role to improve animal welfare and put a stop to animal cruelty.

Spay Day International February 18,19, 20,  2011

Spay Day is an annual campaign of Humane Society International  to inspire people to save animal lives by spaying or neutering pets, street dogs and feral cats.  Fundacion Spay/Panama, Spay Panama's Animals Yes, USA and Los Angeles de los Animales joined the cause with the goal to sterilize 500 animals in 40 hours. The plan was to go to the east side of Panama and start by sterilizing the strays at the maximum security prison of La Joya, then go to two locations in Chepo. We came up with plan B at the spur of the moment with the following results:
GORGONA BLITZ March 12-13, 2011, with Spay the Strays

In collaboration with Spay the Strays, a new milestone was reached on March 12, 2011:  animal number 32,000th was sterilized.  Edith from Gorgona brought CHILINDRINA, a female mutt, weighing 20.3 lbs to be fixed.  Before the equipment was set up, people started arriving with their pets.  214 animals were brought in to be sterilized: 159 dogs and 55 cats.

SAN MIGUEL
PROJECT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE
MUNICIPALITY OF PANAMA

Local community organizers are asked to do the list of appointments for surgery and to identify a place where the operations can be done.  Once the place is determined, Spay/Panama goes inspect the place and make sure everything is in order.

While inspecting San Miguel, we saw this little dog with a horribly twisted leg and an open sore, three puppies were trying to suck milk out of her.  The little dog's name is Lana.  She was hit by a car six months ago and the driver did not stop to help her.  Her guardian does not have the facility nor the funds to take her to a vet clinic.  Lana became pregnant and with all the pain and suffering she tries to take care of her pups.  Like Lana, there are thousands of similar cases.

VERACRUZ April 16-17, 2011

This was our fourth sterilization campaign in Veracruz.  People formed lines early Saturday morning, despite being told the team would be arriving after 5pm on Saturday.  The Clinic was set up in less than 30 minutes and all stations prepared.  100 animals were sterilized, vaccinated, dewormed, sprayed against fleas and ticks, had their ears cleaned and injected with vitamins in six hours.  On Sunday people started arriving at 6am.  101 animals were sterilized and treated in five hours.

2nd Sterilization Campaign with Panama City Mayor's Office LAS GARZAS OF PACORA, May 29

What do you see at the side of the road to Las Garzas?:  A LARGE QUANTITY OF SICK AND SKINNY ANIMALS.  Thanks to the support of the Junta Comunal of San Martin, Social Development Program, the Mayor's Office of Panama City covered 28% of the cost to sterilize 75 animals on Sunday, May 29, 2011.  The goal was to sterilize, deworm and vaccinate 75 animals, but the campaign was such a success that at the end of the day, 165 animals were sterilized in six hours.

STERILIZATION CAMPAIGN REGULO SANCHEZ GYM, Talamanca, Arraiján

Spay/Panama sterilized animal No. 33,722th, of which 3,072 are from Arraijan area on Sunday, June 12, 2011.  From early hours, people arrived with their pets and rescued stray animals.  It was a campaign full of enthusiasm and a small sample that there are many citizens that have a genuine concern for the welfare of their animals and of the homeless animals.  This shows that little by little our society is more aware of these issues.

CHEPO CENTRO EDUCACION BASICA GENERAL JOSE GABRIEL DUQUE

120 dogs and 16 cats were sterilized on June 25-26, 2011.  This will avoid over 9 million puppies and kittens being born in the next six years.  $77.75 was collected from the guardians, or the equivalent of 58 cents per animal.

ARRAIJAN, July 17, 2011

BOQUERON ABAJO AND ARRIBA
NOVEMBER 5-6, 2011

On the afternoon of November 5, 2011, Spay/Panama team went to Boqueron.  Civil Defense was not able to lend us a truck to take the equipment, so we overloaded our old pickup.  When we arrived, people and animals were waiting.  Coordination was done by Sarah and Sean Strong.
The Spay Center was set up in minutes and Dr. Augusto, Dr. Ruben, Dr. Tammy and Dr. Beth started operating.

NICOLLE GARAY SCHOOL, ALCALDE DIAZ
NOVEMBER 27, 2011

How to control the number of abandoned animals:  a dilemma in Panama.  Most of the population understand the importance of sterilizations.  We do a lot of education, but only those that have a car or pay to bring their pets can come to our spay/neuter center.  We mobilize to remote locations so that people do not have to pay to transport their pets to our spay/neuter center.  And we have Ricardito Moreno that lives in la Cantera that asks us:  I only have 25 cents, can you operate my dog?

Casco Viejo, Santa Familia
December 18, 2011

25 dogs and 34 cats were sterilized in the former Santa Familia School Building in 4th Street, Casco Viejo.  Wonderful view from the building.  Early morning setup Cats brought to the spay center, in sacks, in pillow cases, in kennels, in traps  Dogs were brought in by owners, rescuers and feeders
Besides the spay/neuter, other conditions are evaluated and treated  This blitz was sponsored by LOS ANGELES DE LOS ANIMALES and the residents of Casco Viejo.  A special thanks to Melanie Holmes for doing the cat trapping

GUARARE & NEIGHBORING AREAS
January 9 and 10, 2012

A few years ago, Zoraida R. brought Juanita, the dog that lives at the Juana Vernaza School to Spay/Panama in Panama City to be spayed.  When the animals are sterilized, they live longer and healthier lives.  This is the photo of Juanita the day of the blitz.  Working together gives us the opportunity to do much more.  At this Spay event, the Health Ministry, Civil Defense, and the residents joined forces and 303 animals were sterilized (245 dogs and 58 cats)

SANTA FE, DARIEN, FEBRUARY 1-2, 2012

In October 2011, we were contacted by a parish in Albany, New York to have a spay event in Darien.  We asked how/why Darien?  Anne Brockenauer responded that their parish in Albany, NY is St. Vincent de Paul and are committed to social justice, and had partnered with the Centro Pastoral in Santa Fe, Darien through Pueblos to People.  The Centro Pastoral in Santa Fe is a Maryknoll Mission Site, staffed by 2 Maryknoll Sisters, Melinda Roper and JoJi Fenix.
