Spay Panama-Chiriqui
Chiriqui Chapter of Spay Panama

Here in the highlands of Panamá, in March of 2006 Dorothy Atwater and a few helpful volunteers began a mission to end the suffering of dogs and cats - often homeless, starving, and diseased - and to help educate people that their pets have feelings and need love, proper food, shelter, and water. We primarily provide low-cost spaying and neutering to the less advantaged Panamanians. We ask $20 per dog and $10 per cat (which is my actual cost) but no one is turned away for inability to pay.  For more information, articles, and pictures on the Chiriqui Chapter Spay/Neuter Campaign, please visit, www.spaypanama-chiriqui.org

GUARARE & NEIGHBORING AREAS  January 9 and 10, 2012

A few years ago, Zoraida R. brought Juanita, the dog that lives at the Juana Vernaza School to Spay/Panama in Panama City to be spayed.  When the animals are sterilized, they live longer and healthier lives.  This is the photo of Juanita the day of the blitz.  Working together gives us the opportunity to do much more.  At this Spay event, the Health Ministry, Civil Defense, and the residents joined forces and 303 animals were sterilized (245 dogs and 58 cats)  These are some of the dogs and cats that brought their guardians. Spay/Panama is constantly working to improve animal welfare and avoid unwanted litters that end up roaming the streets sick and hungry, tearing garbage bags, and making them the target of abuse and cruel death.  Improving animal welfare is possible with the participation of collaborators, being individuals, institutions, companies, government, when committed in working together can make a big difference.  Spay/Panama operates Wednesdays and Saturdays in Panama City.  But these off-site blitzes are necessary to reach those animals that can not come to our center.  To recover most of our costs, we must collect $25 per dog and $12 per cat; this does not include transportation and meals for the surgical supplies and staff.  Thanks to the support of Dr. Broce from the Health Ministry, who donated gloves, syringes and rabies vaccine; thank you to Professor Zoraida de Rodriguez, Principal of the Juana Vernaza School for letting us use the school for the spay event and a special thanks to Civil Defense for providing the transportation.  Total monetary donation collected was $599.25 or the equivalent of  $1.98 per animal.  The daughter of Professor Zoraida made a generous donation and through her contacts, she was able to get donations from international delegates; nevertheless we need your help --- only 30% of the costs of this spay event were recovered where 303 animals and their guardians were benefitted immensely.
